Rules & etiquette

We've been running a Rust PvE server since May 5th 2016 and in that time we've learnt that not everyone wants to share. These rules are designed to help everyone have fun - following them is in your interest and everyone elses.

If you have a problem on the server try and get help in chat first, if no-one there can help you then either try the Discord or use /admin help in chat to request help.

General

We expect you to use some common sense while interpreting these rules as these are a guide to general behaviour, not an exhaustive list of what you can and can't do.

General etiquette

Playing Rust is all about making your own fun and we're here to help you do that, but we're also here for everyone to have fun, which means respecting what other players are trying to do.

Be nice.

Raiding & looting player bases

Raiding is strictly prohibited on the PvE server. If you're caught raiding a player base outside of The Purge, you will be banned from the server.

What about decayed bases?

If you've found a decayed base you can take any items that are accessible. You may not destroy locks, doors or any other items to help access loot; that will be considered raiding and may result in a ban.

Please don't use a decayed base as the basis for your own base without the previous owners permission. While decaying bases are lootable, the owner may return at anytime to repair their base and continue living there.

Traps in decayed bases

You can destroy traps in decayed bases, especially ranged traps such as autoturrets. You'll be doing other players a service.

What about bases with open doors?

Whilst doors shouldn't be left open, it does happen. Unless you are sure the base is decaying you should not take anything from the base - it isn't a good look when we check the logs.

Killing players

Killing is not allowed on the PvE server - this includes sleepers. If you are on with friends whom you want to kill, make sure you are all in a team. This makes life easier for admins to know they don't need to kick or ban you.

Help, I'm being shot at!

If you find yourself under attack then it is acceptable to use force to defend yourself. When safe, explain in chat what happened so an admin or regular players can advise.

Be aware though, the PvE server has bots at monuments and at airdrops. These bots will shoot at you and if need be chase you high and low to try and kill you.

No amount of complaining in chat will stop them.

OMG, I thought you were a bot

If you kill someone by accident e.g. you thought they were a bot, once again explain in chat what happened (maybe with an apology) and help the other player recover their inventory.

Looting players

Looting of players out in the open is frowned upon by the community and you'll probably get moaned at in chat if you're caught.

If you find a backpack out in the open, then the proper thing to do is ask in chat who it belongs to, if no-one replies then help yourself to the loot.

If you have inventory that has value to you then we suggest you don't sleep in a field surrounded by bears, wolves & scavengers.

Make a base, sleep in it.

Building, transport & deployables

If you're here to build, harvest and make friends, then these rules will be most applicable to you - if you're looking to socialise then ask in chat if there is a town.

Building etiquette

As a community it is not unusual for a town to appear shortly after map wipe. To make towns fun for everyone to live in, please follow these building rules.

Large or compound bases

Towns are better suited to smaller, more open-plan bases rather than fortresses & castles. If you're planning a megastructure or compound base, do everyone a favour and build it somewhere less populated.

Heli towers

It isn't great having a Patrol Helicopter crash on your base, so it is preferred that heli towers are built out of town, where there is plenty of space for the debris field, the napalm & and the ensuing chaos that follows engaging an angry Huey.

Blocking access

When building close to one another you may be asked for access to your tool cupboard by your direct neighbours.

If you're precious about access to your Tool Cupboard you could ask surrounding bases how much space they need before building, or just build somewhere with plenty of space on the outskirts of town.

Waterways

Please make sure access to waterways are kept clear - bridges & piers are welcome but make sure there is enough height in the middle or space around the ends for both types of motorboat to pass.

Make sure your structure is well lit at night so players can navigate around it at night, if you have openings for players to pass thru the structure highlight those somehow.

Trap bases

Trap bases are only allowed as part of events and should be clearly marked as such. The trap base (as a part of an event) should have an element that makes it fun and/or challenging and should always be done with player consent.

During The Purge you can create whatever manner of devious base to entrap/ensnare/enrage players as you like.

Quarries

You can build anywhere around the Quarries that are dotted around the island, but structures found to be restricting access to these quarries will be removed from the map without warning or discussion.

Private quarries, from rewards, should be placed out of towns so as to not dominate.

Base defences

Landmines & Snaptraps

Landmines & Snaptraps should only be used within the perimeter of your base walls - neither should be placed out in the open for any reason.

Autoturrets

You can place armed Autoturrets inside your base at any time - in fact it is recommended in order to deter would-be thieves.

When placing your Autoturrets, ensure there are no lines of sight where they could target a passer-by. Check high rocks and cliffs around your base, get a friend or admin to check if you are unsure.

If you have Autoturrets on your roof or in your compound, please make a reasonable effort to ensure they can't target low flying minicopters.

Peacekeeping turrets must be visibly sign-posted from a distance so people are not caught unawares. Peacekeeping turrets in highly populated areas such as towns, monuments or roads may be asked to be disabled if they are a nuisance to other players.

Shotgun Traps & Flameturrets

Like Autoturrets, you can deploy Shotgun Traps & Flameturrets inside your base at any time. Just like Autoturrets, ensure these cannot target players passing your base.

SAM Sites

The deployment of live SAM sites is forbidden until The Purge. Their range is too great and they target players floating gently thru the sky in their Hot Air Balloon.

Vending Machine usage

Trade is encouraged on our servers as a means to meet other players and to progress towards your endgame goals.

For the safety of you and other players on the server, the following items are prohibited from sale thru vending machines: Rockets (all types), Timed Explosive, Satchel Charges, Explosive Ammo (all types).

If you want to sell any of these items, please only do so face-to-face, only to players you know will use them responsibly.

Any other item may be sold via the Vending Machines, including the components required to make the items above e.g. explosives.

While we appreicate this won't stop a determined raider from gaining these items, it will at least slow them down.

Scrap Helicopters & Minicopters

For protection most players will either build a hangar for their copter or use the roof of their base. For additional protection you can add Autoturrets to cover the area as long as you adhere to normal base defence rules.

If you're copter is stolen please use the logs to find out who it was and notify a moderator - please be aware we don't replace copters if they aren't secured or protected from theft.

Player owned deployables

Structures such as Large Furnaces, Small Oil Refineries & Watercatchers should be enclosed within the perimeter of your base if you don't want other players using them. These structures out in the open are considered public and will often be used temporarily by players who don't have the ability to craft them.

If you find someone using your Large Furnace or Small Oil Refinery, simply ask them to collect their resources so you can use your structure - if this convenience to other players is an inconvenience to you, then I suggest you enclose your structure.

If you're using a structure you find out in the open, please be respectful to the owner and remove your resources if asked.

Server events

Rust gives players plenty to do beside hunting and building - the events in game are for everyone and only happen occasionally. As such don't hog any the events or try and do all of them one after the other.

Event etiquette

There are a variety of different events in Rust for all levels of player.

To make sure everyone gets a chance to take part in these events, please don't do any one event back-to-back.

If the server is quiet or no-one is doing an event, feel free to ask in chat if it's okay before doing an event a second time.

Hogging an event such as the Oil Rig or Bradley takes the fun out of playing the game for others.

Don't do it.

The Patrol Helicopter

The Patrol Helicopter is a formidable foe that makes its appearance every few hours. We have a page dedicated to Patrol Helicopter etiquette so you know what you can and can't do.

The Bradley

Bradley appears on the map fairly regularly at the Launch Site. We have a page dedicated to Bradley etiquette so you know what you can and can't do.

The Cargoship

The Cargoship appears in the waters around the island periodically. We have a page dedicated to Cargoship etiquette so you know what you can and can't do.

The Chinook Drop

The Chinook visits the island every few hours to drop a Timed Crate full of supplies. We have a page dedicated to Chinook Drop etiquette so you know what you can and can't do.

Airdrops

Periodically the kind souls on the mainland will send supplies to help us survive - these events will draw players from all across the map to bask in the glory of two sets of wooden armour and a waterpipe shotgun. Enjoy!

Okay, so drops aren't quite that bad now but they definitely aren't worth fighting over, so we don't.

Public airdrops

Airdrops are first-come, first-serve and you aren't allowed to build up at them to gain a height advantage.

You can try and discourage other players from attending the party, but no claims can be made on the drop itself. Once the drop lands you'll most likely have to be quick to get the loot, although some people will politely share. If that's you, well done.

NOTE: If someone does attack you at an airdrop you are allowed to defend yourself, but be aware bots defend the airdrop, so be careful who you're shooting out there.

Private airdrops

When someone throws down a Supply Signal then that airdrop is for that player only. That's the rule, no caveats or confusing loopholes to try and exploit... just let it be.

If you've thrown down a supply signal and someone is taking your stuff, explain to them in chat it's not allowed. If there is an admin in game they will most likely help you out. If not, use /admin please in chat to summon an admin.

Monuments and other map utilities

Monuments and other points of interest in Rust lay scattered across the landscape - these are hot destinations for any player looking to advance, follow these rules to keep everything fun for everyone.

Monument etiquette

Monuments are a great source of components and other higher end loot - you don't have to say if you are heading to a Monument but it'd be appreciated if you respond to players asking if a Monument you recently looted has been looted.

Using the Excavator

Because of the length of time it takes to operate The Excavator, we only allow teams to use 20 barrels in any day - this generous limit will give you 40 minutes of use, plenty of time for anyone.

Quarries & pump jacks

If you're running one of the publicly accessible quarries or pump jacks, then you must stay online to watch its progress. Once your fuel runs out you must collect your newly mined resources so other players can use them.

If you find fuel or resources in a quarry or pump jack then ask in chat who it belongs to, and ask them to come and collect it.
